Meet the Maker Behind Get Hooked by SKG
I did a mini little interview with our new consignment; Stephanie from Get Hooked by SKG! Lets get to know her in this post!
Can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about Get Hooked by SKG? -My name is Stephanie and I am a knitter and crocheter by hobby but I would like to make it a more fruitful endeavor. When I moved to Wisconsin in 2022 I was gifted loads of yarn from my family that they never used, so I decided I should do something with it and began Get Hooked!
How did you first learn to crochet and knit? -When I was in senior year of high school, we were doing a final exam before graduation when one of my classmates (after she finished her exam) whipped out a pair of knitting needles and yarn. I was enamored from then on. I learned how to knit first and then the following year when I was away at college I learned how to crochet. When in doubt, YouTube it out!
What types of items do you most enjoy making? -I don’t have a specific item or items I enjoy making. It’s mainly things that my friends/family ask me to make instead of something I’m making just for the heck of it. Like my sister just asked me to make Octopi amigurumi for her colleagues at the office and that was more enjoyable for me than making a scarf because I had extra yarn.
Is there anything new or seasonal that you are especially excited to bring? -I specifically like it when people ask me to make them Spooky season or winter season items. My favorite project I’ve done thus far was a tree skirt for a 7 ft. Christmas tree. It is now displayed in my sister’s house every year!
What does supporting handmade and local artists mean to you? -I know the amount of effort and money it takes to make these special items to display at markets. And I know how much time is dedicated to making sure that they look just right for that one person who decides to buy it, because I go through the same process as other local artists. Ever since I started Get Hooked, I’ve become more likely to buy small business for niche items than going to Amazon or a grocery store to find a name brand.
What kinds of items can shoppers expect to find from you at our September markets? -I will have an assortment of ice cream cozies, keychain wristlets, scarves, beanies, and I am collaborating with Warmer Sundays on what else would be nice to display at market!
When you are not crocheting or knitting, what do you enjoy doing? -I am a big reader and a lover of nature. You’ll often find me outside doing both or on a walk with the animals enjoying the fresh breeze. I love to hike, play tennis, and watch other small businesses be successful on YouTube.
Where can people follow you or contact you to see more of your work? I will slowly be adding inventory to my Etsy shop. I am also building up a new business Instagram that way I am not limited to one method of discovery and so that I can showcase my work outside of selling it!
Cozy blanket or handmade scarf? -Cozy blanket all day!
Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate? -Coffee in the morning, London Fog tea in the evening, and hot chocolate when it’s chilly/snowy.
Dream project you would love to make someday? -Patchwork Christmas blanket (each patch/granny square is a different theme of Christmas).
